Meet Christiaan Bezuidenhout, a 26-year-old golfer who's making waves in the game. But his journey could have taken a drastically different turn.

Two years into his life, a misunderstanding led Bezuidenhout to mistakenly drink rat poison, thinking it was a bottle of lemonade in the supermarket. In a blog post for the European Tour 2019, the golfer recalled this incident as the moment that forever transformed his life.

"I was almost taken away by the innocence of that moment," he wrote. The poison wreaked havoc on his entire nervous system, and one of the long-term effects was a stutter. This impediment resulted in him avoiding social activities, as his self-confidence was dampened by anxiety.

Depression crept in, and at 14, he was prescribed betablockers to manage his condition. He continued using these drugs during his amateur career, allegedly to curb anxiety, but during the British Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush in 2014, a random drug test caught him off guard. He claimed to be taking betablockers to manage his stutter, but he had given it little thought.

"?Herz Gebrochen"?

A call from his father confirmed the worst: he had failed his exams and was suspended from school for two years. The International Golf Federation did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment on the suspension and its later reduction.

Bezuidenhout penned a blog post in 2019, recounting the scathing criticism he received from within the golfing community and "so-called close friends from home." He was accused of using betablockers for performance enhancement, which caused him and his family great pain.

"People have said some horrible things and I was labeled as a golf prodigy kicked out of the sport due to a drug-related incident," he wrote.

But broken-hearted, Bezuidenhout used the forced break to refocus and return to golf stronger than ever. He won his first game back with a seven-shot lead and has continued his winning streak since, claiming three European Tour titles and setting his sights on the Majors.

"It's incredible to stand here, winning the national championship is a dream for all South African golfers." He stated after his six-shot victory. "It's surreal. I worked hard today. Hole number 9, it didn't go according to plan, but I worked hard to win."
