Medvedev's Comment: "Shelving Peace Proposals on the Ice"

Following demands from European powers and the US for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, Russia is considering the proposal. Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, stated that Moscow is open to "thinking about" the plea, despite previously dismissing it as pointless. The turnaround comes after Dmitri Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, set the internet ablaze with a colorful rejection of peace talks, urging Western allies to shove their peace plans up their rear ends.

Russia's Viewpoint

Moscow has taken a confrontational stance, with Kremlin spokesman Peskov criticizing the Western leaders for adopting a confrontational approach, rather than promoting peace. Medvedev also questioned the logic behind choosing between a ceasefire for the so-called hordes or new sanctions. Before the ultimatum, Peskov had warned that Russia would not be deterred by sanctions and that weapons supplies to Ukraine should cease as a condition for a ceasefire.

The European Push

Leaders from France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland have united in calling for a 30-day ceasefire and have threatened more sanctions if Russia does not comply. They have expressed solidarity with Ukraine and warned of massive, coordinated sanctions if the ceasefire is violated. The U.S. is expected to play a role in monitoring any agreement, with President Trump previously proposing a similar truce. However, it remains unclear how the U.S. will respond to Putin's proposal for direct talks in Istanbul.
