Medvedev’s coaching gamble with Scarlett Johansson pays off ahead of Australian Open
Daniil Medvedev has made a strong start to 2024 after a coaching change last summer transformed his game. The Russian star, a three-time Australian Open finalist, will now aim for his first title in Melbourne when he faces Jesper de Jong in the opening round. His recent success follows a period of adjustment with new coaches Scarlett Johansson and Rohan Goetzke.
Medvedev parted ways with long-time coach Gilles Cervara in mid-2023, calling it a big decision. He sought a fresh approach and quickly connected with Scarlett Johansson and Goetzke, who understood his game from the start. Initially brought in on a trial basis until the end of 2025, their partnership was later extended into 2026.
Under their guidance, Medvedev ended a two-year title drought by winning two ATP 250 tournaments. He described the coaching shift as a turning point that helped me a lot, praising their different style and the positive atmosphere in training. The 27-year-old has reached three Australian Open finals (2021, 2022, 2024) but is still chasing his first victory at the event. Now ranked among the tournament’s top seeds, he opens his campaign against world number 73 Jesper de Jong. The match will test whether his recent improvements can finally secure him the title that has eluded him.
Medvedev’s coaching change has already delivered results, with two titles breaking his long drought. His extended partnership with Scarlett Johansson and Goetzke suggests confidence in their methods. The Australian Open will reveal whether this new direction can bring him his first Grand Slam win in Melbourne.
