Preserving the Stance: Moscow's View on the 30-Day Ceasefire Proposal
Medvedev strikes a discordant note as he indicates that peace initiatives are being neglected or ignored.
In the midst of international pressure and support for a 30-day ceasefire, Russia is playing its cards close to the chest. As per Russian state media, the Kremlin plans to "ponder" over the peace proposition presented by Kyiv's Western allies. Yet, in a no-holds-barred interview with CNN, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov branded this pressure as "futile," á la carte-style.
This stance marks a departure from earlier dismissals voiced by Dmitri Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council. In a burst of frustration, Medvedev bluntly wrote on social media, "Shove your peace plans up your ass." Unapologetic, Medvedev accused Western leaders of undermining talks for peace in Kyiv, opting instead to wave threats at Russia.
The visiting dignitaries, led by the new German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, were in Kyiv to facetalk with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj and underscore the need for a ceasefire, failure of which may lead to more sanctions. Selenskyj's concern mirrors the sentiment of the European Union, which is already formulating an additional sanctions package in anticipation of Russian noncompliance.
A humorous jibe aside, Medvedev's rhetoric hints at the Russian stance on the ceasefire proposal – a proposal that has been met with skepticism and conditional acceptance, with tough talks regarding weapons supplies and military preparation in the offing. With tensions still running high, it remains to be seen whether the international community can persuade Moscow to accept the ceasefire on the terms advocated by Ukraine and its allies.
