Take My Peace Plan, Shove It, Says Moscow's Medvedev in Fiery Statement

Medvedev expresses dissatisfaction with peace initiatives being neglected or sidelined

In a heated response to the international pressure on Russia, the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitri Medvedev, made headlines with a blunt utterance: "You can stick your peace plans where the sun doesn't shine."

Ukraine, spearheaded by the "Coalition of the Willing," is pushing for a ceasefire with Russia, taking aim at Moscow for its relentless invasion. Facing the brink of further sanctions, the Kremlin has remained unyielding yet open-minded. To counter these efforts, Medvedev seemingly threw down the gauntlet, generally believed to be aimed at Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who recently visited Kyiv to back the ceasefire push.

President Volodymyr Selenskyj and other European leaders had earlier demanded that Russia agree to a 30-day ceasefire starting on May 12, 2025. This demand came as part of a broader initiative supported by Western nations, including the European Union. The Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, reiterated that the ball now rests in Russia's court.

In a different interview, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov questioned the wisdom of diplomats who prefer to issue threats rather than foster peace negotiations. Russian officials have consistently expressed apprehension over the ulterior motives behind the West's aggressive stance, suspecting that a ceasefire would only provide Kyiv with the opportunity to reorganize its military for future attacks.

The ceasefire proposal comes on the heels of Russia's unilateral Victory Day ceasefire, which Ukrainian officials claim was repeatedly violated by Russian forces. Despite the proposed ceasefire, events on the ground indicate that Russia's commitment to ceasing hostilities remains uncertain.

These uncertain conditions haven't deterred the international community from rallying behind Ukraine. European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer, and Donald Tusk, have all publicly expressed their support for a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict, reinforcing the need for Russia to engage in constructive dialogue.

The Kremlin, headed by Dmitri Medvedev and Dmitri Peskov, remains unyielding in the face of international pressure, including ceasefire demands from leaders such as Volodymyr Zelensky and Emmanuel Macron, amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Medvedev's fiery statement on WhatsApp seemed to challenge Chancellor Friedrich Merz's ceasefire push, further aggravating the tense political atmosphere. The Commission has also adopted a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, perhaps illustrating a wider discord between Russia and the European Union, as the Associated Press has reported.
