The Kremlin's turned a deaf ear to Ukraine's demand for a 30-day ceasefire, set to kick off this Monday. In a heated exchange, Dmitri Medvedev, Russia's deputySecurity Council head, delivered a fiery response: "Stick your peace plans up your ass." His colorful rebuke came during a meeting in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj, and Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Merz in the Hot Seat: Tough Talk in Kyiv

Selenskyj welcomed Merz, Macron, Starmer, and Tusk to Kyiv and threatened sanctions if Russia refused the ceasefire. Merz was straightforward in an interview with ARD's "Tagesschau" from Kyiv, stating that another sanctions package was already in the works in the EU, and that Putin needed to realize the war is unwinnable. Merz, Macron, Starmer, and Tusk arrived in Kyiv in solidarity with Selenskyj.

Medvedev's Feather Ruffling and Peskov's Counterpunch

Medvedev took issue with the visit, asking why the Europeans were invoking peace talks while issuing Ukrainian sanctions. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov also criticized the Western stance, deeming it more confrontational than cooperative. Peskov suggested Link1 that the halt of Western arms supplies to Ukraine would be a more relevant condition for a 30-day ceasefire.

Background: Russia's Strategy and Conditions
