The latest Russian headlines are dominated once again by former President Medvedev and his controversial statements since the start of the Ukraine war. This time, it's Germany's CDU leader Merz who's caught Medvedev's ire.

Nemesis in waiting, Friedrich Merz, has stirred a tempest in Moscow with his remarks about a "war of aggression against Europe" at Putin's hands. Merz may not have taken office yet but he's already spouting lies reminiscent of Goebbels, former Nazi Minister of Propaganda under Hitler, Medvedev sneered on Telegram, using a derogatory term for Germans in Russia (Fritz) and even implying Merz will end up like the Nazis did in 1945.

In the Bundestag debate on new defense spending on Tuesday, Merz accused Putin of waging war against Europe. "It's not just a territorial war against Ukraine, it's a war against our country too. The daily attacks on our data networks, destruction of supply lines, arson attacks, contract killings in our country, barracks espionage, disinformation campaigns..." Merz said, according to the speech protocol. Medvedev seized on this and remarked, "Yes, that's the kind of war your Nazi nation, Merz, waged against our country in 1941-1945."

War of Words

  • The roots of the discord can be traced back to Merz's assertions about Putin waging a multi-pronged war on Europe through various hostile actions, including disinformation, sabotage, and assassination attempts.
  • Medvedev's strong response is seen as a reflection of Russia's defensive stance against perceived slander and criticism from the West.

War-torn Legacy

  • Historian Timothy Snyder views Medvedev's aggressive rhetoric as a bid to establish a credible image for a potential post-Putin era. However, Medvedev's popularity among the Russian populace is dubious due to an investigation into his wealth reportedly exceeding one billion euros, which sparked massive protests in Russia.
