Fireworks at the Fortress: Meissen Castle Centenary Bash in 2025!
Meissen Castle Festivity Marks Momentous Anniversary Celebration - Medieval-themed celebrations at ancient fortresses
Here's the lowdown!
Prepare for a grand spectacle at Meissen Castle in 2025 as the city celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Meissen Castle Festival! According to project leader Holger May, the festivities will kick off for the first time under the city's management, occur every two years, and span nine events from June 14 to 22.
The festivities commence with a thunderous extravaganza by performer Philipp Hochmair and his band Die Elektrohand Gottes. On the following day, catch the magnetic charm of actor Tom Pauls and the Elbland Philharmonic as they bring Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream in Sächsisch" to the stage. Both evenings are already sold out, but tickets for the other events are still up for grabs.
The Albrechtsburg courtyard, seating 830 guests, and the cathedral, accommodating 350, will host a variety of performances, featuring the swing orchestra of Andrej Hermlin, the eclectic tunes of Dota & Band, and the lively beats of The Firebirds. Brass pop and scrap rock will resonate through the air as Burgfräulein Bo & the Ritter Rost Band take the stage for one night only.
Initially, the Meissen Castle Festival's roots trace back to 1925, with local theater makers bringing the mystery play "Jedermann" to the courtyard. However, the intervals between festivals were larger, with a gap following 1945 and another from 1963 until the city theater ensemble dissolved.
The courtyard plays made a comeback in 1983 and 1984, and again in 2008 and 2009, before cultural promoters revived them. The successful 2016 premiere of a "Jedermann" new production gave hope for regular celebrations. After a forced break due to the corona pandemic in 2023, the Landesbühnen Sachsen took over and later relinquished management to the city.
