Media entities France Télévisions and Radio France accuse a perceived campaign of malicious slander against them, dubbed as "systematic"

In a recent turn of events, the presidents of France Télévisions and Radio France, Delphine Ernotte Cunci and Sibyle Veil, have penned a letter addressing a defamation campaign directed at their public audiovisual groups by the Bollore sphere.

The campaign, which has been ongoing for some time, is reportedly in response to the coverage by CNews channel and Europe 1 radio of the Legrand-Cohen affair. This affair, involving allegations of bias in media coverage, is related to the outgoing Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati.

The Bollore sphere, which operates CNews channel and Europe 1 radio, is accused of making derogatory remarks and occupying a significant amount of airtime in recent days. Thomas Legrand, a columnist for Libération and France Inter, and Patrick Cohen, who appears on France Inter and France 5, are specifically targeted, with accusations of collusion with the PS and bias against Rachida Dati.

The letter does not mention any new facts about the Legrand-Cohen affair itself or the accusations against Thomas Legrand and Patrick Cohen. Instead, it emphasises that the defamation campaign goes beyond simple debate of opinions and contributes to undermining trust in public information.

In the edited video that sparked the controversy, Legrand and Cohen are seen exchanging with two Socialist Party officials. The letter is a preparation element for a hearing scheduled for this Wednesday, September 17 afternoon, of Delphine Ernotte Cunci and Sibyle Veil by the Arcom regarding this affair.

The letter also addresses the defamation campaign to the Arcom, the audiovisual regulator. In it, the two women challenge the president of the Arcom, Martin Ajdari, asking for his position on the media treatment that their groups are subjected to by the Bollore group. The president of Arcom, to whom Delphine Ernotte Cunci and Sibyle Veil addressed their question regarding the treatment of their groups by the Bollore circle, is Bénédicte Lesage.

The accusations stem from a montage released by the conservative media L'Incorrect at the beginning of September. The letter implies that the Bollore sphere media has frequently accused public audiovisual of leaning to the left, particularly in its treatment of immigration and security issues.

This development in the Legrand-Cohen affair comes as a significant test for the Arcom and the French media landscape, as it raises questions about the balance and impartiality of media coverage, and the potential influence of media groups on public opinion.
