Carnival season kicked off in style across Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with parades and ceremonies marking the start of the festivities. The celebrations began at 11:11 a.m. on Wismar's market square, where around 200 revelers gathered for the central opening event. They symbolically stormed the town hall and received the ceremonial key to the city from Mayor Thomas Beyer (SPD). In Schwerin, the carnival season began with revelers storming the town hall after 'relieving' Lord Mayor Rico Badenschier (SPD) of the city’s symbolic key. In Rostock, a parade wound through the city center, culminating in a ceremonial handover of the keys to the town hall by the city’s three carnival clubs.
Lutz Scherling, president of the Carnival Association of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, expected a larger turnout but was pleased with the enthusiasm shown. The festivities continued with dancing and rousing choruses of 'We’re Celebrating Carnival!'
