Millions for the state election campaign in MV - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's 2026 election sees record campaign spending surge

Campaign spending is rising ahead of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's 2026 state election. Several parties have announced budgets exceeding half a million euros, with some planning to invest over a million. Social media and grassroots mobilisation are playing a key role in their strategies.

One new alliance, Zusammen bewegen, is also stepping into the race. It has organised a statewide action day for February 28, 2026, to influence political debate through public events.

The SPD is preparing a campaign budget similar to its 2021 spending, which topped one million euros. The party's social media expert, Lilly Blaudszun, is promoting top candidate Manuela Schwesig almost daily. Schwesig's Instagram following of 51,000 surpasses that of all other lead candidates.

The CDU plans to invest over one million euros, focusing on policy discussions and door-to-door campaigning. Meanwhile, the Greens have allocated €350,000, while the Left Party holds around €600,000 in its campaign fund. The Left aims to attract younger voters through targeted social media efforts.

The AfD leads in online engagement with 15,700 followers and is ready to spend a high six-figure sum. Nationwide group Campact estimates the AfD's budget could reach one million euros and has pledged to match that amount. Campact is backing local initiatives like Together in Motion and Grandmothers Against the Far Right to counter the AfD's influence.

Another major player, the BSW, has set aside €480,000 for its campaign. The Zusammen bewegen alliance, formed in October 2025, brings together over 350 initiatives, groups, and individuals. Their statewide action day on February 28 will feature info sessions and concerts in Schwerin, Wismar, Ludwigslust, Rostock, Laage, Stralsund, and Greifswald.

The 2026 state election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is shaping up to be a high-spending contest. Parties are pouring resources into digital outreach, local events, and direct voter contact. With multiple groups investing heavily, the campaign is expected to intensify in the coming months.
