Slippery roads due to rain and frost towards the end of the week - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania braces for icy chaos as frost and rain strike

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is preparing for hazardous weather as rain and frost create dangerous conditions by the end of the week. Forecasters warn of black ice, snow, and freezing temperatures that could disrupt travel and utilities from Thursday into Friday night.

The troublesome weather will begin overnight into Thursday, with snow moving in from the south and reaching the coast by morning. Southeastern Mecklenburg, east of Lake Müritz, will first see rain mixing with sleet, followed by Western Pomerania. The rest of the region may face similar conditions by evening.

Temperatures will hover between -3°C and 0°C on Thursday, then rise slightly to -1°C to +2°C on Friday. The sudden drop in surface temperatures raises the risk of black ice, as rain falls onto already frozen ground. Iced power lines and falling branches could also pose threats, mirroring last week's transport chaos when trains were cancelled and buses suspended.

The cold snap will intensify early next week, bringing prolonged subfreezing conditions and the possibility of severe frost. While no specific areas have been flagged for power outages from iced overhead lines, past incidents highlight the potential for disruption.

Residents should prepare for difficult travel and possible service interruptions as the weather worsens. The combination of rain, sleet, and frost will likely make roads and pavements treacherous until conditions ease.
