Film funding awards nearly 1.3 million euros in the North-East - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Backs 10 Bold Film Projects with €1.24M Funding

The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Film Fund (MV Filmförderung) has awarded €1.24 million to ten new projects. The funding supports four feature films, an animated documentary, and a short film, each offering fresh artistic perspectives. Many of the selected works are directed by women and explore unique regional settings.

Among the funded projects is Nobbi im Nebel, marking Lucas Thiem’s first feature as director. The film received €470,000, the largest single grant in this round. Several stories unfold on the island of Rügen, linking the region’s landscapes with bold storytelling.

Mia Maariel Meyer will direct and write Windstärke 17, an adaptation of Caroline Wahl’s sequel novel. The project secured €250,000 in funding. Meanwhile, Nina Vuković is helming Gittersee, a 1976 East Germany-set adaptation, also backed with €250,000. Another film, directed by Leonie Rebentisch, draws from a 1996 novel, though its funding details were not specified.

The fund emphasised that female-led projects were chosen for their creative strength, not as a quota. Each film reflects the region’s distinct locations while introducing new voices and narratives.

The €1.24 million investment will bring diverse stories to life, from historical dramas to contemporary works. Many productions will begin filming soon, with several set to premiere in the coming year. The funding highlights the region’s growing role as a hub for innovative cinema.
