Training Exercise Simulates Emergency Response in Schleiden

A training exercise was conducted by the Volunteer Fire Department Mechernich on July 12, 2025, at the Kreisbrandschutzzentrum in Schleiden. The exercise aimed to simulate an emergency response to a severe storm in the city of Gemünd, as announced by the deputy district fire chief, Wolfgang Fuchs.

The scenario involved unstable weather conditions, thunderstorms, heavy rain, and storm gusts in Gemünd. Reports indicated severe storm damage and a suspected tornado in the city, with roofs blown off and partial building collapses with spills reported in the city center.

Incident sectors were formed to manage the crisis. One of these sectors was led by Christopherus Wiesen, the crew of the incident command vehicle of the Löschzug Kommern. Jörg Ernst, Leon Heske, and Dirk Küsters provided support. The crew of the ELW 1 from the municipality of Blankenheim simulated the local incident command of the city of Schleiden in the affected area.

The THW local association Schleiden, led by Björn Groß, set up a holding area and registered fictitiously arriving vehicles and crews. The specific members of the leadership staff of the THW local group Schleiden during the exercise are not publicly available.

Members of the Löschzug Kommern also participated in the training. The ELW 2 from Kall, under Katharina Klinkenberg, ensured operational readiness. These forces included components of the IuK circle unit and members of the operational-tactical command staff of the district of Euskirchen.

According to the script, incident commander and deputy district fire chief Johannes Gebertz called for numerous forces from the entire district area to manage the situation. The training involved cooperation with a local incident command and command tools.

After a successful management of the incident, the focus shifted to the transition to a command structure operated by an ELW 1, simulated for the first time as part of targeted training.

The exercise was a valuable experience for all participants, with findings to be incorporated into the future optimization of command support. The exercise is set to be repeated in the coming years with changing participants, as announced by Fuchs. This training is crucial for ensuring effective emergency response in such situations.
