Germany: FDP Drops Below 5% in Recent Polls
Berlin - The Free Democratic Party (FDP) has reportedly slid below the crucial 5% threshold in voter approval, according to a Kantar/Emnid poll. It is important to note that this survey was conducted prior to the party's conference this past weekend. In the weekly Sunday Trend poll for "Bild am Sonntag," the Liberals lost one point and currently stand at 5%.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) continues to lead with 36% of the vote. The Greens remain steady at 18%, while the Social Democratic Party (SPD) drops one point, securing 16% this week. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) gained one percentage point, currently polling at 11%. The Left Party and other parties are unchanged at 8% and 6% respectively.
The poll, conducted by Kantar, surveyed 1,534 individuals from September 10 to 16, 2020, and asked respondents which party they would vote for if federal elections were held next Sunday.
Recent polling trends indicate a significant shift in the German political landscape. The CDU/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) is currently leading, but has experienced a decline in support, losing approximately 2.6% in the last three months. On the other hand, the AfD is experiencing growth, with approximately 1.9% increase over the same period, making them the second most popular party.
The SPD's current polling at around 15.6% is significantly lower than previous levels, indicating a potential historic low in the next election. The FDP, meanwhile, is struggling to maintain a presence, polling below the 5% threshold necessary for representation in the Bundestag. The Greens are stable, while Die Linke (The Left) and the BSW (Brandenburg United Sports Clubs) remain unchanged.
The potential inability of the current government coalition to maintain its majority could lead to significant changes in the political landscape leading up to the 2029 federal election. The rise of the AfD, a right-wing populist movement, reflects a broader shift in German politics, with traditional parties facing challenges from such movements.
The FDP's struggle to exceed the 5% threshold suggests a potential challenge in securing representation in the Bundestag, raising questions about their future policy-and-legislation contributions in politics. Meanwhile, the weekly general-news still shows the CDU leading, but the shift towards the AfD indicates a significant change in the German political landscape, marked by challenges for traditional parties and the rise of populist movements.
