Measles claims second life in Texas, echoing tragic news from New York City

A 8-year-old girl from Texas met her unfortunate end on Thursday due to "measles pulmonary failure," as reported by The New York Times. This tragic event marks the second death in the Lone Star State linked to the ongoing measles outbreak.

Officials from the Trump administration are still investigating the cause of death, casting doubts on the published report.

With this latest fatality, Texas has accounted for the majority of the outbreak with 481 cases, followed by New Mexico with 54 cases and Oklahoma with 10 cases (8 confirmed and 2 suspected). Kansas might also be part of the outbreak, with 24 confirmed cases reported as of Wednesday.

Experts caution that these case numbers may be a severe undercount, as many cases often go undetected.

Unexpectedly, a significant number of the reported cases are among individuals under the age of 18. This has raised concerns about rising hospitalizations and complicated cases, particularly for younger children who are more susceptible to complications.

Dr. Christina Johns, a pediatric emergency physician at PM Pediatrics in Annapolis, Maryland, warned, "The more children who contract the disease, the higher the probability of more children experiencing complications."

At the time of writing, inquiries sent to the Texas Department of Health and the US Department of Health and Human Services were yet to receive a response.

Despite the ongoing crisis, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr has downplayed the gravity of the situation, sparking criticism over the agency's response.

As of the current data available, the ongoing measles outbreak in the Southwest US has resulted in three fatalities, with two of these tragedies occurring in Texas and one in New Mexico, involving unvaccinated individuals.
