Ireland's Flat Racing: A Bountiful Day of Victories for Trainer Michael O'Callaghan
In a thrilling day of horse racing at an unspecified venue, the spotlight shone brightly on trainer Michael O'Callaghan as his horses claimed several victories. Among the standout performances was the impressive win by Luna Mia, a daughter of Ardad, in the opening 6f fillies' maiden.
Luna Mia, the 9-4 favourite, proved too strong for her competitors, repelling the challenge of Tornado Kiss to win by a comfortable margin. The victory marked a significant milestone in Luna Mia's career, her first win, and a testament to her steady progression with each of her six starts.
The ground, a crucial factor for Luna Mia and her sire Ardad, seemed to favour the filly perfectly on this day. Ben Coen, who partnered Luna Mia in her victory, completed a double with successive victories, also guiding Bay Of Supremacy to a win earlier in the day.
Bay Of Supremacy, a Mayson colt and a £60,000 breeze-up purchase, defeated Final Melody by three-quarters of a length at odds of 11-2. The victory was a significant one for trainer Michael O'Callaghan, who has been guiding nine winners home in the last 14 days.
After the race, O'Callaghan expressed his delight with Luna Mia, stating that she felt the best she has ever felt. This sentiment was echoed in the performance of another of his horses, Iamimmaculate, who relished the step up to a mile, defeating 15-8 favourite Ipanema Beach by a length and a quarter.
O'Callaghan's success didn't stop there. Aidan O'Callaghan's horses, Controlled and Port Ferdinand, won the 5f and 7f juvenile maidens respectively. The day concluded with Colin Keane partnering the 5-2 shot Madbadanddangerous to win the penultimate 7f maiden.
The day was not without a significant win for Aidan O'Brien either. His horse, Scandinavia, secured victory in the St. Leger race at Doncaster in September 2025. Scandinavia won as the favourite, marking O'Brien's ninth victory in the St. Leger and his third consecutive win in this race following Continuous and Jan Brueghel.
Roaring Fire, a 7-4 chance, also made headlines with a dominant win in the colts' and geldings' maiden over the same distance. The horse blasted three and a quarter lengths clear of Savile Row, with the win heavily supported by punters.
The day was also significant for jockey Colin Keane, who reduced the gap to five in the race to be crowned champion Flat jockey in Ireland. With such a successful day, it's clear that the Irish racing scene is in for an exciting season ahead.
