McLaughlin-Levrone clinches 400m world title with the second swiftest time on record

In the world championships on Thursday, US track athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone clocked the second quickest time ever to secure an astonishing victory in the 400 meters women's event.

Syedy McLaughlin-Levrone Shatters Records and Wins 400m Gold at Tokyo Olympics

Syedy McLaughlin-Levrone, the American athlete, made history at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 by winning the gold medal in the women's 400m final. The 26-year-old, who also holds the US record in the 400m and the world record in the 400m hurdles, demonstrated her versatility and determination in the rain-soaked National Stadium.

Despite the wet track, McLaughlin-Levrone motored out of her blocks and took the lead in the home straight. She passed her closest competitor, Australia's Maddy Anning, by the halfway mark and ran a fine curve to secure her victory. Syeda McLaughlin-Levrone finished the race in a time of 47.78sec, setting a new championship record.

The defending champion, Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic, took silver with a time of 47.98sec, the third fastest time ever. Syeda McLaughlin-Levrone's presence in the 400m has revived an event that has lacked spark in recent years. Bahrain's Salwa Eid Naser claimed bronze with a time of 48.19sec.

McLaughlin-Levrone's victory in the 400m will go a long way to silencing those detractors who questioned her decision to step away from the 400m hurdles. She had stated that she wanted to show herself she can do it after doubts about her switch. McLaughlin-Levrone credited her coach Bobby Kersee for her transition from the 400m hurdles.

In the semi-final, McLaughlin-Levrone had smashed the US record, setting herself up for a thrilling final. The National Stadium had cooler temperatures and steady rain during the final, but it did not deter McLaughlin-Levrone.

After her victory, McLaughlin-Levrone returned to the track to soak up the plaudits, don an American flag, and search out her husband Andre in the stands for a kiss. She took a brief moment's respite sat on a chair away from the public eye.

Syedy McLaughlin-Levrone's performance at the Tokyo Olympics was a testament to her talent, determination, and versatility. Her victory in the 400m has undoubtedly secured her place as one of the stars of the Games.
