McLaren's rare double DNS in China traced to electrical faults
McLaren suffered a rare double retirement at the Chinese Grand Prix after both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri failed to start. The team has since traced the issue to separate electrical faults in their power units. Team principal Andrea Stella called it an extremely unlucky coincidence. The problems began before the race even started. Engineers detected an electrical fault in Norris's car during preparations. Piastri's issue appeared later, just as the drivers lined up on the grid. With no quick fix available, both cars were withdrawn, leaving McLaren with a double zero in the constructors' standings.
The faulty components were sent to Mercedes-HPP for a joint investigation. Stella confirmed the team would work closely with partners to understand the failures fully. He stressed that preventing a repeat was now the top priority.
Norris admitted it took time to unpick what went wrong. Reflecting ahead of the Suzuka weekend, he described the situation as frustrating but avoidable in future. Meanwhile, reserve driver Leonardo Fornaroli will begin his official duties this weekend, ready to step in if needed for either Norris or Piastri. McLaren has pinpointed the technical causes behind its double DNS in China. The team is now focused on analyses with Mercedes-HPP to avoid similar setbacks. Fornaroli's presence in Suzuka ensures backup support as the season continues.
