In a thrilling end to the F1 Canadian GP, George Russell emerged victorious ahead of Max Verstappen, with a dramatic collision between McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri stealing the spotlight.
Mercedes roars back, McLaren faces a devastating blow: Russell claimed a stunning victory for the Silver Arrows, leaving McLaren reeling from their first major setback in the title fight. The turn of events saw Norris suffer a costly crash, plunging him further behind Piastri in the championship race.
The intensity between McLaren teammates Norris and Piastri reached its peak, culminating in a devastating crash just four laps from the finish line. "My fault, sorry, guys," a remorseful Norris radioed immediately after the collision.
While Russell and Verstappen fought for the lead, Norris and Piastri were locked in their own tense battle for fourth place. However, Russell's domination left Verstappen and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton trailing far behind.
With his victory, Russell broke the stranglehold of Verstappen and McLaren, who had won every race up until now. This fourth career win marks a crucial milestone for Russell, whose contract with Mercedes expires at the end of the season.
Despite a promising start, Verstappen felt his tire performance deteriorating, ultimately compromising his efforts to catch Russell. Norris, with his water-damaged helmet and the costly crash, suffered a heavy blow in the championship fight, now 22 points behind Piastri.
Though they did not contribute to the win, Ferrari drivers Leclerc and Hamilton finished in fifth and sixth, respectively. Nico Hülkenberg continued his impressive run with another solid finish in the points, placing eighth.
As tension brewed between Russell and Verstappen, Russell took charge from the pole position at the start. Verstappen struggled to mount a challenge, and Mercedes' young gun consistently extended his lead.
The focus persistently remained on the first-row duel between Russell and Verstappen. "The first corner will be decisive, but it's a long race," said Red Bull's motorsport advisor Helmut Marko, on Sky. Despite initial fears of more controversy, the race started off smoothly, with no incidents to speak of.
