Smokin' Hot McLaren Burns Formula 1 Rivals in Imola Practice
McLaren leads the Formula One race competition.
The cheering crowd wave their Ferrari flags with fervor, but the enthusiasm is short-lived as the team struggles with their vehicles. Despite the sun shining bright, championship leader Oscar Piastri sets the pace, leaving everyone way behind! McLaren's supersonic performance has put them at the top of the food chain.
Formula One fans couldn't wait to witness the action in beautiful Imola, but things quickly took a turn for the disappointment with Ferrari. World Champion Max Verstappen and his Red Bull crew will need to pull off a miracle on Saturday. "We're not fast enough," confessed Verstappen, "our hope isn't high." The team has their work cut out for them, needing to find a new balance. McLaren was clearly faster.
Pierre Gasly in Alpine was the closest competitor to the McLaren duo, finishing practice in third place, one-tenth behind Piastri. Overtaking on this traditional track is tricky, making qualifying (16:00/Sky and RTL) a crucial moment in the race. McLaren appears invincible at the moment, setting their sights on a seventh race win come Sunday (15:00/Sky and RTL).
The rest of the competition, including Verstappen, couldn't keep up with McLaren's blazing speed. With a deficit of more than four tenths of a second, the long-run times were less than hopeful. McLaren was untouchable on both quick laps and long runs.
"This is disheartening," said Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko on Sky, "McLaren is still four tenths ahead. That's a significant amount on this track. We haven't compromised the gap much. McLaren is absolutely dominant." Marko left a glimmer of hope, suggesting the gap could be smaller during qualifying if the setup improves.
Frustration was written all over Ferrari's faces, with both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton complaining about brake problems. "My brakes just didn't work," said Leclerc, while Hamilton lamented them being "a real problem." Ferrari's home race didn't turn out as planned, with Leclerc finishing sixth and Hamilton lagging in eleventh place.
The Italian hope, Kimi Antonelli, born near Bologna, also had a rough day in his Mercedes. He finished only eighteenth, with teammate George Russell taking fourth place ahead of Verstappen. Nico Hülkenberg took last place for Sauber.
