It was a day of two halves at Imola, with McLaren setting the track ablaze, while Ferrari faced a frustrating braking ordeal. The inaugural practice for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix saw McLaren pulling away, underscoring their hegemony in this Formula 1 season.

Waving their red Ferrari banners with gusto, spectators soon realized that the WM leader, Oscar Piastri, was in a league of his own. His teammate, Lando Norris, mirrored the same performance, leaving the rest of the pack trailing in their wake - much like their domineering performance in Miami.

Max Verstappen and the Red Bull squad had their work cut out for them. "We're just not fast enough," Verstappen admitted, adding, "we've got a mountain to climb." Improving the car's balance and finding a better setup seemed to be their only hope for salvaging the situation. Red Bull's motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, echoed that sentiment: "We've got our work cut out for us - McLaren is showing a 0.4-second advantage, which is significant on this track. We haven't made any significant progress." However, Marko reserved judgment for the upcoming qualifying sessions, expressing optimism that their pace might improve.

The best long-run pace belonged to McLaren, with Verstappen trailing around half a second behind Piastri in Friday's practice. The status quo didn't bode well for Red Bull's chances of surpassing McLaren in this race or the remaining season.

Some light at the end of the tunnel came in the form of Pierre Gasly (0.276-second gap) in third place for Alpine. However, the deteriorating conditions that affected everyone made overtaking nearly impossible - a fact highlighted by qualifying on Saturday (16:00/Sky and RTL) and the race on Sunday (15:00/Sky and RTL) as crucial determinants of success.

While McLaren's dominance continued, Ferrari's struggles were palpable. Charles Leclerc claimed sixth place, while Lewis Hamilton ended up in 11th - both lamenting brake issues. Leclerc stated, "My brakes just aren't performing," while Hamilton described them as "a real nightmare." The Ferrari team is on a mission to rectify the issue before the qualifying proceedings.

The Italian hope Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes' young prospect from Bologna, finished 18th, with George Russell hauling him in fourth position ahead of Verstappen. Sauber's Nico Hülkenberg fared worse than his afternoon practice, ending up 19th in the standings.
