McLaren Directs Piastri to Support Norris' Title Pursuit, Relinquishing Lead Role
Revved Up: McLaren's Changing Strategy for Norris vs Piastri
After declaring Lando Norris as their number one driver, McLaren's push for both titles relies on the Brit more than ever. Situated 62 points behind Max Verstappen in the drivers' standings, Norris needs a serious surge to make up ground, while Piastri, in fourth place, is 106 points off the Red Bull driver.
McLaren lags behind Red Bull by a mere six points in the constructors' championship, and the team knows Piastri's contribution could be pivotal in their quest for both titles. Despite this, they've pledged their support to Norris, even as they strive to maintain fairness for both drivers.
Team manager Andrea Stella explained, "We’re biased towards Lando, but we want to do it without excessive compromise on our principles."
The upcoming Azerbaijan GP serves as uncharted territory for McLaren as they seek to enhance Norris' chances without favoring him at the expense of the team's values. When it comes to orders, both drivers must be treated fairly, according to Stella.
Norris has expressed a burning desire to leave Piastri in his dust, not only because of his fast pace but because he believes he deserves to surge ahead. Piastri, who managed to clinch his first win after discussions between team personnel, agreed with the team's decision.
Last season, Norris faltered when converting pole positions into victories, often starting from fifth and snatching triumphs. By contrast, Piastri maintains a cool head, exemplified by his ruthless overtaking maneuver on Norris during the Italian GP.
As McLaren aims for the constructors' title, Red Bull's loss of form has made this season one of the most thrilling since 2021. If Norris and Piastri continue their impressive form, McLaren could snatch the championship from Red Bull, provided they manage internal tensions carefully.
"Our primary goal is to prioritize the team interests," Stella said, acknowledging the current operating context. "The way we approached the race in Monza left the door open for this situation," he added, referring to the heated collision between Norris and Piastri.
