McIlroy reveals reasons for quiet period post-golf and struggles following the Masters.

Rory McIlroy, golf's charismatic maverick, is shaking up the media scene. After six consecutive major rounds, he's finally broken his silence, although not without reason.

Following a lackluster performance at Oakmont during the US Open that left him on a disappointing 10-over 220, McIlroy chose to set the record straight. His reasons? A blend of frustration, personal preferences, and a dash of disillusionment.

"I've earned the right to do whatever I want to do, yeah." This was McIlroy's blunt response when questioned about his radio silence with the media. He's had enough of the routine and is making it clear he's in control of his narrative.

Part of his decision stemmed from his epic effort to win the Masters earlier this year, an attempt that fell short yet left him feeling "a little flat on the golf course afterwards." He admits he wasn't sure how the accolades would affect him and how he'd react.

But it wasn't just the Masters and its aftermath that fueled McIlroy's decision. A leak about his driver's failure of a rules test before last month's PGA Championship at Quail Hollow added to his woes. The fact that Scottie Scheffler's similar misfortune remained private until Scheffler revealed it himselfonly exacerbated McIlroy's feelings of resentment.

"It's more a frustration with you guys," McIlroy told reporters, not holding back. He's been open and accessible for years, but he's grown tired of the system. He's not ready to challenge the rules, but he wants the flexibility to choose when he engages with the media.

"I'm just, yeah, I don't know, I've been totally available for the last few years, and I'm not saying, maybe not you guys, but maybe more just the whole thing (is frustrating)," he went on.

The media landscape in golf is different from other sports. Golfers aren't obligated to speak after rounds like many players in other leagues. McIlroy believes in a two-way street relationship, where both parties benefit but also have the right to set boundaries.

"I hope they don't change it because it's a nice luxury to have," he said. "But I'm just pointing out the fact that we have the ability to do it."

As McIlroy moves forward, he's determined to regain his form and reclaim his place at the top. He's working on his driver issues and seems to be making progress. After all, he's driving the ball better than he has in a long time.

"I've driven the ball as good as I have in a long time, so that's at least a positive this week." This positive outlook, combined with his newfound assertiveness, makes one thing clear: Rory McIlroy is not backing down anytime soon, regardless of who's watching or listening.
