McEntee endorses Humphreys for FG's nomination for the Presidential election
In the lead-up to the 2025 Irish Presidential Election, political parties are gearing up for the nomination process. Among the parties making moves is Fine Gael, where two candidates have emerged as frontrunners.
Fine Gael Candidates
Currently, Heather Humphreys and Seán Kelly are the candidates in contention for the Fine Gael nomination. Humphreys, a former social protection minister and senior figure within the party, has garnered significant support with 38 parliamentary votes, nearly double the 20 nominations required to be the party’s candidate.
Kelly, an MEP, has secured 8 confirmed backers so far, but there is speculation he may withdraw if he cannot secure enough nominations. Despite this, Kelly has expressed enthusiasm for the job, describing the presidency as "the highest honour in Ireland." He is motivated by encouragement from grassroots supporters and believes there is "huge potential in the job."
Heather Humphreys' Platform
While Humphreys' platform hasn’t been detailed extensively, her candidacy is positioned as the frontrunner representing Fine Gael's values and policies. As a former Cabinet minister, she aims to be a president who represents "a modern and an outward looking Ireland with pride on the international stage."
Seán Kelly's Ambitions
Kelly has stated that he is enthusiastic about the prospect of running for president, reflecting the support he has received from many people. He wants to have a strategy to win the election but has not yet detailed specific policy platforms.
Fianna Fáil's Decision
Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil is considering its options for the Presidential Election. Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher has called for a meeting of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party to be convened "urgently" to discuss running a candidate. According to Kelleher, the party should either run its own candidate or support one that represents the party's values.
Tánaiste Simon Harris said the decision to reopen nominations will enable the party to have a candidate in place by mid-September. As of now, no specific candidates have been named.
Other Developments
Helen McEntee, the Deputy Leader of Fine Gael, has announced her support for Heather Humphreys in her bid for the party's nomination. Taoiseach Micheál Martin said Fianna Fáil would make its position on a candidate clear towards the end of the month.
As the race heats up, both Fine Gael candidates are working hard to secure more support. Humphreys has been speaking to party councillors, TDs, and Senators, while Kelly, who has been based in Europe as an MEP, is underestimating the support he has at the grassroots level.
