MBDA Begins Production of New Drone Defense in Bavaria - MBDA Invests €2.4 Billion to Boost Europe’s Guided Missile and Drone Defense

MBDA, a leading European missile manufacturer, has announced plans to invest €2.4 billion by 2029 to expand its production capacity for guided missiles. This significant investment comes as the company begins pre-contract development of a new guided missile to counter drones, to be manufactured at its facility in Schrobenhausen, Bavaria.

MBDA's latest project, DefendAir, is a key contribution to Germany's efforts to build advanced drone defense capabilities within NATO. The company has signed a contract with BAAINBw for the development and procurement of this system. DefendAir has garnered strong interest from other NATO partner nations for European air defense.

MBDA is collaborating with Rheinmetall on a laser weapon system for the German Navy to counter drones. The DefendAir system will be integrated into Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30 air defense vehicle, further enhancing its capabilities.

MBDA's investment in guided missile production and the development of DefendAir demonstrates the company's commitment to strengthening European air defense. With interest from multiple NATO nations, DefendAir is poised to play a significant role in the continent's drone defense capabilities.
