Germans Stumble in Nations League Third-Place Match against France

Mbappé and Video Assistant Referees (VAR): German team forfeits third place position

The German national football team took a blow in the Nations League, losing 2-0 to France in the third-place match, despite a noticeable improvement in their performance. The disappointment came after a hard-fought battle, with Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid stealing the show by scoring the first goal in the 45th minute and setting up Bayern forward Michael Olise for the second in the 84th.

The match played out before 51,313 spectators in Stuttgart was heated, with both teams displaying commitment and passion. Unlike their disappointing 1:2 loss in the semi-final against Portugal, the German squad under Julian Nagelsmann didn't have much to complain about due to a lack of efficiency and luck in front of the goal.

Cold-Bloodedness and Shooting Luck: Missed Opportunities

Inspired by magician Florian Wirtz and often from deep with long balls from Pascal Groß, the German squad created multiple chances with the double strike of Nick Woltemade and Niclas Füllkrug. However, precision was elusive, with stellar performances by France's goalkeeper Mike Maignan denying several scoring chances, including those by local hero Woltemade and Dortmund striker Karim Adeyemi.

VAR Frustration

There were VAR frustrations throughout the match, most notably after a lengthy review that saw a penalty for Germany overturned due to a dive by Karim Adeyemi in the 31st minute. Adeyemi was shown a yellow card, leaving the German team unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

The 0-1 scoreline at halftime had the German players and fans feeling disoriented, as if they were in a completely different movie. Debutant Deniz Undav came on for his club teammate Woltemade, but a quick goal was disallowed due to a foul by Füllkrug.

Tactics and Tactics

With no more tactical shackles on the pitch, the Germans pressed forward, creating more opportunities, but failing to find the back of the net. Meanwhile, the French countered effectively against the exposed German defense, doubling their lead only late in the game.

The loss was a disheartening end to Germany's Nations League campaign and a missed opportunity to boost their preparations for the 2024 World Cup. For France, the win provided them with some momentum following their 4:5 thriller against European champions Spain, while Portugal awaited them in Munich that same evening.

Looking forward, both teams will focus their efforts on World Cup qualification, aiming to address their respective weaknesses and build towards a successful World Cup showing in 2024.

Despite the German national football team's improved performance, they failed to secure a win in the Nations League, losing 2-0 to France in the third-place match. The Premier League's Michael Olise scored the second goal for France, showcasing the impact of European-leagues players on international football. The match further highlighted Germany's struggles to convert chances, with missed opportunities against France's goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
