Mazzotti's court hearing, recounted as "Caught by a Friend" according to Latella
In a shocking turn of events, Demetrio Latella, a 71-year-old pensioner, has made headlines once again, this time as he speaks out about his role in a notorious kidnapping case that occurred in 1975.
Latella, who resides in Oleggio, has been at the centre of the kidnapping of Cristina Mazzotti, a tragic event that took place on June 30, 1975. The victim was found dead in the Galliate dump after being held captive in Castelletto Ticino.
Despite his involvement, Latella maintains that he was deceived by a friend who asked him for a favour. He claims he accepted money for what he calls "a favour" related to the kidnapping, but did not know that Cristina Mazzotti was dead when he cashed the money.
Latella has had 11 trials related to the kidnapping, and served a 33-year sentence, with 22 years in prison, due to his involvement. He was released from prison because he has cancer.
In court, Latella made spontaneous statements, expressing regret and claiming deception. He believes he can defend himself if there is any retaliation or revenge. However, he wishes to return to anonymity after the trials.
Interestingly, Latella was never affiliated with the 'Ndrangheta, a powerful Italian mafia organisation. He stated that on the night of the kidnapping, he was at a bar, and refused the examination of the civil party.
Despite his claims of innocence, Latella's fingerprints were found on the car where Cristina Mazzotti was picked up. This evidence, coupled with his repeated court appearances, has kept the case in the public eye for over four decades.
As Latella continues to speak out, the public will be watching closely to see how this dramatic story unfolds.
