## President Proposes Relocation of Controversial Monument
A monument featuring Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara, known as the "Encuentro" monument, has been removed from the Tabacalera Garden in Mexico City due to administrative irregularities and public opposition. The monument, which lacked the necessary permits from the Committee on Monuments and Artistic Works in Public Spaces (COMAEP), has been a subject of controversy for years, with neighborhood complaints and acts of vandalism[1][2][3].
In response to the removal, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has proposed relocating the statues to preserve their historical significance. She believes that the monument represents a "historic moment" between Mexico and Cuba and should be moved to a more appropriate location rather than being removed entirely[2][3]. The statues are currently in storage, awaiting a final decision on their new location.
President Sheinbaum has also suggested that if the monument is to be reinstated in the Cuauhtémoc municipality, it could be relocated. Meanwhile, the monument to Christopher Columbus, which was removed from Paseo de la Reforma, has been moved to Polanco. The President pointed out the location of the young woman of Amajac, which is near the Glorieta de las Mujeres que Luchan, where a collective is currently occupying[3].
President Sheinbaum has questioned the actions of the mayor, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, in removing the monument and may discuss this matter with the Head of Government, Clara Brugada[4]. Beyond agreeing or disagreeing with the characters depicted, the President believes the monument has no bearing on Mexico[5].
