Mayor Proposes to Label Park as Dahlmeier Park
In the heart of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a temporary memorial site has been established in the Kurpark, serving as a place for mourners to gather and remember the late biathlete Laura Dahlmeier.
The memorial, set up this weekend, features a wooden stele adorned with a photo of Dahlmeier, a lantern, and a stone from the local mountains. The creation of this site was a collaborative effort, carried out in close consultation with her family.
The municipality of Garmisch-Partenkirchen has also set up a condolence book, available on their website, for people to express their thoughts and memories about Dahlmeier. The condolence messages will be collected by municipal staff and compiled into a book that will be given to her family.
The current plan to commemorate Dahlmeier includes renaming the Kurpark as the "Laura Dahlmeier Park." This proposal was made by the mayor, Elisabeth Koch, to the "Munich Mercury" beforehand and is intended to be presented to the municipal council in September 2025. The renaming of the park is in agreement with Dahlmeier's family.
Laura Dahlmeier, a highly respected and lovable personality, passed away at the age of 31 during a mountaineering accident in Pakistan in late July 2025. The municipality was initially reluctant to create a memorial but, following requests from her family, has now actively supported these initiatives to honour her legacy.
The town hall encourages people to write their condolences, stating that the sudden death of Dahlmeier has touched many. The condolence book is another initiative by the municipality to commemorate Dahlmeier, separate from the proposal to rename the Partenkirchen Kurpark to the Laura Dahlmeier Park.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen had already appointed Dahlmeier as an honorary citizen in 2018. The municipality confirmed this information to the German Press Agency.
The memorial site and the renaming of the park are significant steps in honouring Dahlmeier's memory and legacy. These commemorative actions serve as a testament to the impact she had on the community and the wider world of sports.
