Mayor proposes renaming park to honor Dahlmeier.
The picturesque town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, is currently mourning the loss of one of its most esteemed residents, biathlete Laura Dahlmeier. In a heartfelt community effort to honour her memory, the town has set up a condolence book for people to express their thoughts and memories about Dahlmeier.
Dahlmeier, a former biathlete from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, was a highly respected and lovable personality who touched many lives. Following her sudden death, the town has taken steps to provide a platform for people to commemorate her.
The condolence book, a new initiative by the municipality, is available for residents to share their memories and condolences. The book will be collected by the employees of the town hall and handed over to Dahlmeier's family.
In addition to the condolence book, a temporary memorial site has been erected in the Partenkirchen Kurpark. This memorial features a wooden stele with a photo of Dahlmeier, a candle, and a stone from the local mountains. The memorial was created collaboratively with Dahlmeier's family to provide a space for mourning and remembrance.
The plan for renaming the park in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is to rename the Kurpark as the Laura-Dahlmeier-Park. This proposal will be presented by the mayor, Elisabeth Koch, to the town council in September 2025. The family of Dahlmeier has agreed to the park renaming, making it a fitting tribute to the late biathlete.
This initiative is not the first time Dahlmeier has been honoured by the town. In 2018, she was honoured as an honorary citizen of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a testament to her achievements and impact on the community.
The condolence book and the temporary memorial site serve as a poignant reminder of Dahlmeier's life and legacy, offering the community a chance to come together and pay their respects. The memorial site will remain in place until the park is officially renamed in Dahlmeier's honour.
