Former Mayor Peter Schnell of Ingolstadt Passes Away at 88

Peter Schnell, the long-serving mayor of Ingolstadt who dedicated 30 years of his life to the city, has passed away at the age of 88. Born in Ingolstadt in 1935, Schnell served as the city's mayor from 1972 until 2002.

During his tenure, Ingolstadt made significant strides in infrastructure, culture, and city partnerships. Schnell was instrumental in guiding the city through a period of growth and modernization. He is remembered fondly by the Ingolstadt community, who affectionately called him 'our Peter.'

One of Schnell's most notable achievements was his emphasis on citizen involvement. He worked tirelessly to create a city that put people first, and his efforts were evident in the numerous initiatives he launched. Among these was the renaming of Theaterplatz to 'Peter-Schnell-Platz' as a tribute to his significant contributions to the city.

Schnell's dedication to integrating people who were not originally from Ingolstadt was also noteworthy. He played a crucial role in integrating the Seven Citizens of Saxony, demonstrating his commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive city.

In addition to his work in city development, Schnell also established cultural institutions like the German Medical History Museum. He was known for his ability to engage in heated debates with respect, always maintaining a level of decorum that was admired by many.

For his contributions to Ingolstadt, Schnell was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit and the Bavarian Order of Merit. In 2002, he was also bestowed with the honorary citizenship of Ingolstadt.
