In a series of recent events, the Ombudsman's Office in Latvia has issued an opinion regarding the Ogre Municipality's newsletter, "Savietis." However, the opinion does not specifically address the accusations of political bias and misinformation levelled against the municipality.

The suspended amendments to the Notary Law introduced the institution of partnership in the municipality. This change was the subject of a petition signed by 34 MPs, leading to President Edgars Rinkevičs suspending the publication of the law. The Ogre Municipality's website subsequently published a call to citizens to sign a petition to initiate a referendum on the matter.

The Ombudsman's opinion, based on information from the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development (VARAM), emphasises that the newsletter should be non-commercial and politically neutral. It also states that the information provided should be truthful and objective. However, the opinion does not comment on the accusations of misinformation against the municipality.

The Ogre Municipality Civic Cooperation and Development Association has asked the Ombudsman's Office to assess certain content in the municipality's information networks, including the newsletter "Savietis." The association's accusations are based on two quotations from the publication.

One of these quotations, made by Helmanis, the Chair of the Ogre municipal council, refers to the Latvian people as "Kangars," a fictional character. In a separate instance, Helmanis expressed his thoughts on family values and criticized the government for fighting for the right of two men to marry.

It is important to note that the municipality's newsletter is not considered mass media, and the publication of it is covered by the municipality's budget. The Ombudsman's opinion has a recommendatory nature, meaning it does not have a binding force.

Despite extensive searches, specific Ombudsman findings on Ogre Municipality's newsletter controversies, political bias, or misinformation could not be found in the available search results. It is recommended that further investigation be conducted through the Latvian Ombudsman's official publications or local Latvian government transparency portals for such detailed reports.

As the situation develops, it is crucial for both the Ogre Municipality and the Ombudsman's Office to maintain transparency and uphold the principles of truth, objectivity, and political neutrality in their communications.

  1. The Ombudsman's Office in Latvia has issued an opinion on the political neutrality and truthfulness of the Ogre Municipality's newsletter, "Savietis," following allegations of bias and misinformation, but the opinion does not specifically address these concerns.
  2. The EU, along with other global bodies, might be interested in this case, as it involves policy-and-legislation and politics within the municipality, which could have wider societal implications.
  3. The media's coverage of war-and-conflicts and general-news often involves similar concerns of truth, objectivity, and political neutrality, making this case in Latvia a relevant topic for discussion.
  4. On a larger scale, this case could serve as a platform for government and LSM (Latvian State Media) to reassess their policy-and-legislation concerning the media, ensuring accountability and promoting integrity in communications.
