Millions Stand Up Against "King Trump": Fears, Faith, and Fury
"May this administration be toppled"
Wave upon wave of anger and apprehension swept across the nation as millions protested US President Trump's policies during the biggest demonstrations of his second term.
Nina Moring, a devout Christian from Philadelphia, sums up the feelings of many Americans: "Jesus wouldn't support Trump's heartlessness - he'd advocate for the vulnerable, healthcare, and welcome migrants." Unfortunately, what's happening under Trump's administration seems to be just the opposite. Moring embodies this stance with her sign, depicting Jesus riding a donkey with the caption, "True Kings Don't Need Tanks."
Over the weekend, tensions reached a boiling point, as a massive military parade took place in Washington on Trump's birthday. Simultaneously, protests sprang up across the country, with around 2,000 events listed on a central website, ranging from small gatherings of a few hundred to massive marches with hundreds of thousands in attendance. Major cities like Texas, New York, and Philadelphia demonstrated a shared rejection of Trump's policies and the show of force at the parade.
The "No Kings" protests were the largest since Trump took office, and participants demanded a fair trial for all, and a working separation of powers. Since he assumed office, Trump has signed countless executive orders, disregarded numerous court rulings, and pressured Congress with threats. Most recently, he deployed National Guard and Marine soldiers to the streets of Los Angeles following violent protests following immigration raids. The domestic deployment of the military is a divisive issue.
The Fear Factor
Most protests remained peaceful over the weekend. However, one event in Minnesota was canceled due to attacks on two Democratic politicians, and acts of violence occurred in Salt Lake City and New York, resulting in injuries and arrests. In Los Angeles, police used tear gas to disperse a rioting crowd. It seems that the recent raids, protests, and National Guard deployments have ignited a spark of both fear and defiance among citizens.
Sam Bender, a 21-year-old from Philadelphia, believes this demonstration is essential: "We're here today for those who don't feel safe enough to leave their homes." Bender appears confident at the closing rally in Philadelphia, with his freckles, large American flag, and accompanied by his mother and sister.
An unnamed woman, a friend of Bender's, stands at the edge of the rally, her sign reading: "Born American, Heart Mexican." She's there for her father, her voice catching as she speaks. Her father is currently back in Mexico, but he's not a criminal. She wishes her father could return and for less hate in the US. This nurse at a hospital recounts encountering prejudice from patients due to her skin color.
The demonstration is remarkable in its overwhelming peacefulness, with law enforcement officers engaging with protesters and even assisting those in need. When a protester falls to the ground, several people rush to her aid. "Are you alright?" they ask. The woman nods: "Better than the country."
Nina Moring finds solace in prayer. She continues to devotedly trust in God, clinging to her faith amidst the turmoil. "I'm praying for the removal of this administration," she expresses. "And for it to rain on Trump's parade."
