In America's capital, tanks rumble down the streets, and millions across the nation take a stand against the policies of President Donald Trump. As the nation has seen the largest protests yet in his second term, the mere sight of this public outcry encapsulates the intense frustration and fear coursing through the country.
Nina Moring, a devout Christian, voices her deep discomfort with Trump's agenda: "Jesus extols the weak, champions healthcare, and embraces the immigrant." However, Trump works tirelessly to tighten healthcare restrictions and intensify deportations. At the age of 62, Moring joins her husband Mark in Philadelphia to put an end to these damaging policies. Moring finds the escalating chaos within the country absolutely terrifying. She proudly carries a sign that displays Jesus on a donkey, accompanied by the words, "True leaders don't need tanks."
Saturday marked the occasion of a massive military parade in Washington, coinciding with the president's birthday. As this grand spectacle unfolded, protests occurred nationwide. Over 2,000 events were recorded on a central website, ranging from intimate protests of a few hundred individuals, to grand marches with hundreds of thousands. Republican-leaning Texas, Democratic-dominated New York, and progressive Philadelphia became united in zealously condemning Trump's policies.
The "No Rulers" demonstrations were the largest since Trump took office. Protesters denounced Trump's increasingly autocratic approach, demanded due process for all, and demanded checks and balances within the government. Since his presidency, Trump has enacted numerous executive orders, ignored court rulings, and threatened Congress in an attempt to bend them to his will. Most recently, he requested National Guard troops and marine soldiers be sent to Los Angeles after deportation raids sparked violent clashes. The use of military force on American soil is reserved for the most extraordinary circumstances and remains highly controversial.
Fear among the protesters
While the vast majority of protests on Saturday remained peaceful, acts of violence occurred. In Minnesota, two Democratic politicians were targeted, leading to the cancellation of an event. In Salt Lake City, a man was injured by gunfire and required hospitalization. In New York, numerous arrests were made, as per CNN reports. In Los Angeles, police utilized tear gas to disperse an unruly crowd. The protests, deportations, and military presence seem to have ignited conflicting emotions: On one hand, millions have rallied to voice their fears. On the other hand, the deportations and military presence have instilled terror in many, preventing them from joining the protests.
Sam Bender, a 21-year-old from Philadelphia, expresses empathy for those too afraid to participate. "We're here today for those who can't attend this rally," he says. Bender exudes confidence amidst the Philadelphia rally, with characteristic freckles, a large American flag draped around his shoulders, and accompanied by his mother and sister.
A peer of Bender's, however, has opted to remain anonymous. They station themselves at the fringes of the rally, holding a sign that reads: "Born American, at heart Mexican." The young woman explains her purpose. Her father resides in Mexico, but he is not a criminal. A tear forms in the corner of her left eye as she expresses her desire for him to return and for the United States to be free from hate. The woman, a nurse at a hospital, admits that she often faces discrimination because of her ethnicity from coworkers and patients.
A Contemporary of Bender's, on the other hand, prefers to stay hidden. She leans on the edge of the rally, clutching a placard emblazoned with the slogan, "American by birth, Mexican at heart." The young woman is standing up for her father, she explains. The young woman's voice shakes as she speaks. Desiring her father to return, and an end to the rampant hate within the United States, are her primary motivations for attending this rally.

Although casual conversations between police officers and participants are observed, officers remain vigilant. When a protester trips and falls, bystanders rush to her aid, asking about her safety. "How are you holding up?" they inquire. The woman stands up, with a determined look in her eye: "Better than the country."
Nina Mohring finds solace in prayer. Amidst the chaos, she tries to maintain hope, relying on faith to fuel her resolve. "I pray for the removal of this administration," she says. "May it rain on Trump's parade."
