Diving into Skydiving Weight Limits

Maximum Weight for Skydiving Expedition

Skydiving isn't just about jumping out of a plane - it's about safety, comfort, and having an unforgettable experience. And one of the top concerns about that experience is weight limits. Here's the lowdown on why weight restrictions exist, and how they're determined for each dropzone.

The Nitty-Gritty of Skydiving Weight Limits

Skydiving equipment manufacturers thoroughness test their products before they receive a Technical Standard Order (TSO) from the FAA. This order includes a maximum operating weight for every product, which is why a solo skydiving rig has a different weight restriction than a tandem rig.

It's essential to note that military rigs have entirely different weight restrictions. We frequently get asked why military vehicles can be dropped under parachutes, yet a person over 300 lbs can't - physics are not that simple!

Standard Skydiving Weight Limits Unveiled

For most tandem rigs, the total weight limit is 500 lbs, including the instructor, student, and gear. This limit is what makes tandem skydiving weight restrictions in the US range between 225 lbs and 275 lbs. Pushing the weight limit can lead to potential disasters, so it's best to stay within the federal guidelines. At Skydive Orange, safety always comes first.

Comfort is equally important, and the closer a tandem pair is to the 500 lb limit, the more uncomfortable the deployment experience for both the instructor and student. Skydiving is meant to be thrilling, not torturous!

The weight under the parachute affects the equipment's durability and navigation significantly. The tandem instructor uses hand-held control lines called toggles to steer the parachute back to the landing area, so a heavier pair is more difficult to maneuver and strains the instructor's body.

Body Mass Index: A Key Consideration

Body Mass Index (BMI) plays a significant role in skydiving. The tandem harness is designed for various body types, and a fit individual will feel most secure and comfortable. Height and weight proportion are vital aspects, since a heavier individual with a smaller stature will likely have a different tandem harness fit than a larger individual with a similar weight.

Physical Fitness: More Than Just Weight

Skydiving doesn't require you to be an Olympic athlete, but you should be in reasonable health. Tandem students participate actively during the skydiving process, performing tasks such as entering the plane, scooting to the door, and positioning the body in freefall. The most demanding part for most is lifting the knees and feet, as the instructor needs the student's legs clear for a safe landing.

If you have medical concerns, consult your doctor before jumping.

Our Weight Limits: Skydive Orange's Stand

At Skydive Orange, our standard weight limit for tandem skydiving is 220 lbs. We can accommodate heavier individuals, up to 240 lbs, provided they are proportionate in height and weight and in good physical shape.
