Max Webster's 'Earnest' Blends Tradition and Innovation at Noel Coward Theatre

Max Webster's new production of 'The Importance of Being Earnest' is currently playing at the Noel Coward Theatre, offering a fresh take on Oscar Wilde's classic comedy while attempting to please traditionalists. The production, which runs until 10 January 2023, features an unusual twist with cast members breaking from the story to perform ditties dressed as flowers, a decision that has left audiences puzzled.

Stephen Fry takes on the role of Lady Bracknell, delivering the play's most famously quoted lines with his signature wit. The production also features gender-flipped roles, with drag queens making an appearance in the beginning. Olly Alexander plays Algernon Moncrieff, bringing a charming and playful energy to the leading man.

Rae Smith's vivid set and imaginative costumes elevate Wilde's story, occasionally lending it a more abstract atmosphere. However, modernizing Wilde's language and setting has proven challenging, making this production a unique blend of tradition and innovation.

Despite the strange addition of flower-dressed ditties, Max Webster's production of 'The Importance of Being Earnest' is a fresh and entertaining take on Wilde's classic play. With strong performances from Stephen Fry and Olly Alexander, and a visually striking set, the production is a must-see for both traditionalists and those looking for a modern twist on a classic.
