Max Verstappen Triumphs at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Snaps Mercedes' Winning Streak
Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen stormed to victory in the season-finale Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, putting an end to Mercedes' dominant six-race winning streak at the Yas Marina Circuit.
The 23-year-old phenom outclassed Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton with ease, as the Mercedes duo settled for second and third place respectively.
Verstappen's triumph was his second season victory and the tenth of his career so far. "It was really fun out there today. We did pretty much everything right. Starting from the front allows you to control the pace, making things simpler," stated Verstappen post-race.
Verstappen's teammate, Alexander Albon, finished fourth, while Hamilton found himself under pressure to concede positions despite trying his best to cling on.
A Disappointing End to a Challenging Season
The season's finale marked an underwhelming end to yet another challenging year due to the global pandemic. In early 2020, nearly all sports, including Formula 1, were postponed or cancelled. However, the eventual resumption saw a shortened 17-race schedule.
This year, Hamilton once again emerged as the season's star, clinching his seventh career title. However, the Briton was unable to bow out in style, admitting to battling the after-effects of COVID-19 ahead of the race.
"You can't win them all," he conceded after the race. "Considering what I've dealt with over the past few weeks, I am somewhat satisfied with my performance today. Perhaps not to the extent we wished, but congratulations to Max."
The only intrigue surrounding this race was the prospect of the fastest car – both McLaren and Racing Point were vying for the third spot in the constructor standings. Initially, Racing Point led with a 10-point advantage, but a setback saw Sergio Perez retire early.
Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz of McLaren eventually clinched fifth and sixth place, respectively, before eventually claiming the third spot – marking McLaren's best finish in nearly a decade.
With just 96 days left before the new season begins, teams will be eager to get back on track.
Relevance of Enrichment Data
Although not directly involved in the 2021 event, it's noteworthy to mention that in the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Max Verstappen did not participate due to a power unit issue. However, during this year's race, his Red Bull Racing team showed improved form, positioning themselves as a strong contender for the 2022 season.
