Matti Schmid takes the lead at World Wide Tech Championship with FedEx Cup ambitions

Matti Schmid leads the World Wide Technology Championship after the second round in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with a one-shot advantage. Schmid, currently ranked 70th in the FedEx Cup, aims to finish in the top 60 to secure spots in two $20 million signature events next year.

Schmid shot a 9-under 63, including a 6-under par stretch, to reach 17-under 127. His eagle putt on the par-5 18th helped him go out in 29. Tied for second at 16-under 128 are Nick Dunlap and Sami Välimäki. Dunlap, exempt in 2026 due to his two victories last year, had a 67 but missed a short birdie chance and hit a wild drive on the seventh. Välimäki, at 103rd in the FedEx Cup, birdied three of his last five holes for a 67.

Chad Ramey is alone in fourth at 14-under 130 after a 64. Victor Perez and Ben Griffin are tied for fifth at 130. The cut was set at 5-under 139, with Will Gordon making it with two shots to spare after a 69, including an eagle on the 17th.

With only three tournaments left this season, the top 100 in the FedEx Cup will retain full PGA Tour cards for next season. Schmid, aiming for the top 60, and Valimäki, seeking PGA Tour access, have crucial months ahead. The chase for the title continues in the final rounds.
