In a thrilling uphill drag finish at the Volta a Catalunya stage one, held in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, 19-year-old Matthew Brennan of the Visma-Lease a Bike team clinched his second consecutive victory in the race.

Tibor del Grosso, an Alpecin-Deceuninck rider, attempted to shake things up with a lone escapee move around 2km from the finish line. However, Brennan, who had already proven his mettle as a contender in the stage one sprint, followed closely behind.

With just 500m to go, a significant gap had formed between Del Grosso and the peloton. But Brennan was not to be outdone. Launching his sprint, he came round Del Grosso in the closing metres to take the victory.

This triumphant performance marks Brennan's fifth consecutive win, following his first professional victory days prior to the Volta a Catalunya. He has now won four races in a row, including two with Visma's development squad and one with the senior team at the GP de Denain.

Brennan's post-race interview was filled with gratitude towards his team and expressed his joy at his victory. He will wear the leader's jersey on Tuesday's lumpy stage of the Volta a Catalunya, which includes a category-one climb, and promises to be another challenging test for the young rider.

Despite the relatively flat run-in, Tuesday's stage is expected to be a tough contest. With Brennan's current form, however, there's no doubt that he will be a force to reckon with.
