Matthäus tips German team into World Cup semi-finals - Matthäus predicts Spain’s 2026 World Cup triumph over England in final showdown
The 2026 World Cup, set to run from June 11 to July 19, will be the largest tournament in history with 48 teams and 104 matches. Former German captain Lothar Matthäus has shared his predictions, forecasting Germany's journey to the semifinals and Spain's eventual victory in the final.
Matthäus expects Germany to dominate their group stage. He predicts a 7-0 win over Curaçao, a narrow 2-1 victory against Ivory Coast, and a 2-2 draw with Ecuador. Moving into the knockout rounds, he sees Germany defeating Scotland 2-0, edging past Norway 3-2 in extra time, and overcoming Morocco 2-1.
In the semifinals, Matthäus anticipates a tight clash between Germany and Spain. He forecasts a 3-2 loss for Germany after extra time, sending Spain through to the final. Germany, however, would secure third place by beating Argentina 2-1 in the playoff. For the final, Matthäus backs Spain to lift the trophy. Under the guidance of coach Luis de la Fuente, whose contract runs until summer 2026, Spain are predicted to defeat England 2-1 in the showpiece match.
The expanded 2026 World Cup will see 48 nations compete across the US, Mexico, and Canada. Matthäus's predictions place Spain as champions, with Germany reaching the semifinals before falling to the eventual winners. The tournament's scale and competitive depth promise an intense battle for the title.
