matterr Secures €63M for Game-Changing Polyester Recycling Plant
matter, a specialist in polyester recovery, has secured a significant funding boost for its innovative recycling project. The company, led by CEO Melanie Hackler, has received a 30 million euro grant from 'Productive.NRW', with additional investment bringing the total to around 63 million euros. This will enable the construction of a small industrial plant in North Rhine-Westphalia, set to commence production in 2027 with an annual capacity of 10,000 tons of recycled material.
The plant, a key technology for the circular transformation of textile and packaging markets worldwide, will use matter's innovative depolymerization process. This technology breaks down polyester into its original primary materials under atmospheric pressure, allowing for the recycling of textile blends and multilayer packaging that are typically landfilled or incinerated. The company chose Germany for the plant's location to maintain strategic independence.
The funding decision, described as a crucial milestone by Hackler, will enable matter to implement its project of providing recycled polyester economically, scalably, and in primary material quality. Besides the state grant, additional investors such as Climate Investment, which manages funds supporting innovative companies in energy-intensive sectors, have contributed to the project's financing.
With the plant set to start production in 2027, matter's innovative recycling technology promises to significantly contribute to closed material cycles. The company's success in securing substantial funding, including a 30 million euro grant from 'Productive.NRW', signals growing support for sustainable and innovative industrial projects in Germany.
