Matt Cameron discusses challenges from lengthy shows and ongoing touring, revealing why he departed Pearl Jam, while also teasing the impending release of the last Soundgarden album, although not providing a specific date.
In an exclusive interview with Billboard, Matt Cameron, the drummer of Soundgarden, has given an update on the band's highly anticipated seventh and final album.
The band, known for their grunge rock sound, has been working on new music since prior to Chris Cornell's tragic suicide in 2017. However, the legal issues between the surviving members and Chris Cornell's widow have been a significant factor in the delays. Thankfully, these issues were resolved in 2023, allowing the band to return to the tapes and continue their work.
The album is not expected to be released this year, but fans can look forward to it after the band's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on November 8, 2025. Although no exact release month has been confirmed yet, the band is optimistic about the future of their music.
The recording process has been emotionally draining for the remaining trio, especially with the absence of Chris Cornell's powerful voice. However, hearing Cornell's voice on the album has been empowering for Cameron.
In a departure from his role as the drummer, Cameron has formed a new band, Is This Real?, where he provides vocals and guitar. This new endeavour has seen him step forward from behind the kit, showcasing a different side of his musical talent.
Cameron's departure from Pearl Jam in July was an amicable parting of the ways. He has since spoken with Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, and is focused on a face-melting 70-minute set with his new endeavours.
The band is excited about the future and the prospect of releasing their seventh and final album. Fans can rest assured that the band is working diligently to bring their music to the world, and the wait will be worth it. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in the world of rock music.
