Donald Mathew: A Life Dedicated to Music and the Outdoors
Donald Ernest Mathew, a man with a lifelong passion for music and the outdoors, passed away on August 11, 2025, in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Born on June 15, 1954, in Sheridan, Wyoming, Mathew spent his formative years in the Bighorn Mountains, a region that held a special place in his heart.
Mathew's musical talents were evident from an early age. He began playing the piano, but it was the snare drum that truly captured his interest during his middle and high school years. This passion led him to join the American Legion 7th Cavalry Drum and Bugle Corps in Sheridan, where he served for an impressive thirty years. Mathew attended practices and parades throughout Wyoming and Montana with the Corps, showcasing his skills to countless spectators.
Skiing was Mathew's ultimate passion. After retiring, he moved to Texas to live near his daughter and grandsons, where he continued to enjoy the slopes. His favorite and final chairlift companion was his daughter, a testament to the bond they shared.
Mathew was a dedicated family man. He married Jane Zelenka on December 31, 1981, and together they raised one daughter, Susan. Mathew is survived by his loving wife Jane, his sisters Jeanine Jackson and Reenie Cynova, his daughter Susan (Brad) Wootton, and his grandsons Alexander and Benjamin Wootton.
In addition to his musical and outdoor pursuits, Mathew worked as a surveyor for the Wyoming Department of Transportation for over forty years. His career allowed him to contribute to the infrastructure of his beloved state.
No services are planned for Mathew, but his family suggests going for a hike in his memory. Donations may be made in his memory to the Sheridan Community Land Trust (https://sheridanclt.org/donate/). Mathew performed for family and friends throughout his life, leaving behind a legacy of music and love. He will be deeply missed.
