In a shocking turn of events, a football match between FC Erzgebirge Aue's U16 and FSV Zwickau's U17 was prematurely ended due to violent incidents occurring on the stands. The ruckus began what was originally a nerve-wracking top-of-the-table clash in the U16 Landesliga.
The game, streamed on football.de, was poised for a thrilling spectacle as Aue aimed to hold onto their position, while Zwickau coveted a chance to narrow the gap toward the summit. Regrettably, sportsmanship took a backseat to unruly behavior, as the game was called off after merely 12 minutes. 130 spectators had officially registered for this match.
Rumors circulated that around 30 individuals, clad in black and purple balaclavas, invaded the Zwickau fan area, causing a ruckus in the stands. According to reports, three teenagers aged 15 and a 19-year-old sustained injuries, and fan gear was stolen. One of the injured teenagers required hospitalization, whereas the rest left with minor wounds. The hoodlums scurried away into the woods, eluding authorities.
Police forces apprehended a 27-year-old suspect for his alleged part in the violent incident, suspecting him of creating a public disturbance. 40 police officers were present at the scene.
"More Security Personnel Than Usual"
FC Erzgebirge Aue's official statement, published on their website with the title "FCE Apologizes for Incidents at U16 Game", acknowledges the "deadly attacks on spectators" and "previous provocations". However, Aue maintained that any such actions were not warranted in response to the provocation. As soon as the perpetrators are confirmed, the club promised to take firm action against them.
According to Aue, a gang of "hooligans" penetrated the Zwickau visitor area of the stands in the 12th minute, leading to physical confrontations among spectators. Despite providing "significantly more security personnel than usual for youth games", Aue was unable to prevent the escalation. Given the worsening safety concerns, the referee had no choice but to forfeit the game.
The fate of the game remains uncertain, with authorities yet to determine whether it will be replayed or resumed at a later date or if the sports court will decide the game's final outcome. A win for Aue would have placed them atop the league standings entering the final matchday. Zwickau could have reduced the gap to league leaders SC Borea Dresden and Aue's youth team with a win. However, Zwickau's youth team's championship hopes have been diminished, as Dresden and Aue will face each other in the season finale.
