Location
Discover the Fundamentals
Find a flat, open area with no obstacles
A bunnyhop consists of these elements:
- find a suitable location
- set a moderate speed
- position yourself right
- compress your body
- lift the front wheel
- level the bike
- land safely
Speed
Prepare Your Playground
Ride at a moderate pace (about two cranks)
Choose a flat, open area that's free of traffic and obstacles. I first learned to bunnyhop on a quiet street, with a big ol' smile on my face.
Speed Matters
Position
Ride at a steady pace, neither too fast nor too slow. Aim for about two cranks' worth of speed. Before you tackle step 3, practice picking up the front and rear ends to get the hang of it.
Center your weight, bend knees & elbows slightly
Get Comfortable
Center your weight, bend your knees and elbows slightly, and grip the handlebars firmly but not rigidly.
Compress
Set Yourself Up
Crouch down, preparing for the hop
Crouch down into a squat position, ready to explode upwards.
Lift Off
Lift front end
Pull the handlebars toward your chest to lift the front wheel, then use your feet to scoop the pedals upward, focusing on lifting the rear end.
Pull up the front wheel
Level the Playing Field
Push the handlebars forward and point your toes down, leveling the bike mid-air.
Level
Touch Down Swiftly
Push handlebars forward & scoop pedals to lift the rear end
Extend your legs and arms slightly in anticipation, and aim to land both wheels simultaneously or slightly rear first (remember to absorb the impact with bent knees to avoid injury).
Practice, Practice, Practice
Land
Repeat the process, starting with small hops and gradually increasing the height as you gain confidence. Practice smart, wear protective gear, and make every ride a learning experience!
Land both wheels at once, absorbing impact with bent knees
Time to Refine Your Technique
Once you've got the basics down, work on improving your technique, landing more smoothly, and leveling the bike more efficiently in the air. Competition or adventure awaits, my friend!
Practice
Overcoming Challenges
Repeatedly practice, starting with small hops
Common errors (we all have them) include incorrect body position, inconsistent speed, and uneven landing. Here's how to overcome them:
- Body Position: Use a camera to record your bunnyhops, observe, and adjust accordingly to maintain the ideal position (weight centered over the bike, knees and elbows slightly bent).
- Speed Consistency: Maintain a constant, controlled speed for better control and timing.
- Uneven Landing: Practice landing both wheels at once or the rear slightly first, with a focus on keeping your weight centered.
Go Forth and Bunnyhop!
You've reached the end of the road, but the journey has just begun. Master the bunnyhop and open up a world of freestyle BMX fun. Embrace each ride, learn from your errors, and relish every successful hop. Remember: a positive mindset drives progress.
Happy bunnyhopping, adventurer!
