MasterChef 2025: A New Era Awaits
After a tumultuous year, the BBC has announced that MasterChef will return to our screens in August, following a series of consultations with the contestants. The decision comes after a misconduct inquiry that substantiated multiple claims against both presenters, Gregg Wallace and John Torode, during MasterChef 2024 and 2025.
The investigation found Gregg Wallace responsible for inappropriate sexual language, humor, and other misconduct, with 45 of 83 complaints substantiated. John Torode, on the other hand, had an allegation involving racist language upheld. Both presenters were ultimately sacked by the BBC. Torode learned about his sacking from media reports, while Wallace expressed deep regret for any hurt caused and cited a recent autism diagnosis to explain aspects of his communication style.
Despite the dismissals, the BBC proceeded to air MasterChef 2025 but edited out much of the pair’s usual jokes and banter. The production company, Banijay UK, stated that Wallace’s return to MasterChef is untenable. However, the future of MasterChef involves removing Wallace and Torode, with changes likely in judges and show structure, though detailed plans are not publicly reported.
The first three episodes of MasterChef 2025 will be available on iPlayer on August 6, with episode 2 airing on BBC One on August 7 and episode 3 on August 8. More than 50 hopefuls from across the UK will join MasterChef 2025 to showcase their culinary skills.
The first challenge for the contestants is called 'Basic To Brilliant', where they must transform an everyday item into something special. The second new challenge is part of the Invention Test, where contestants create different dishes from a given basic recipe.
Last year's winner of MasterChef was Brin Pirathapan, a veterinary surgeon inspired by his Sri Lankan heritage. The winner of MasterChef 2025 will have big shoes to fill.
MasterChef 2025 will air on BBC One in August, and while John Torode and Gregg Wallace will still be part of the judging panel, their on-screen presence might be limited. The BBC believes it is the right thing to do for the amateur chefs who have given much to the process.
