In the wee hours of May 2, a brutal Russian drone strike on Zaporizhzhia sent shockwaves through the city. The initial count of casualties soared from an alarming 1 death and 28 injuries to a heartrending 34 people seeking medical attention.

Among the injured, 16 are still hospitalized, with two in critical condition. The tragedy also touched the lives of two young children, who bravely endured the turmoil.

A harrowing 11 Shahed drones pummeled the city over 14 minutes, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Residential areas, a university, and a critical locomotive repair plant were all hit, damaging 27 apartment buildings, over a dozen homes, and crucial infrastructure. As a result, fires erupted in several districts, and the clean-up process continued throughout the night.

The locomotive repair plant, which serves passenger trains, took a heavy blow, sustaining widespread damage. Despite Ukraine's proposed 30-day pause on striking civilian areas, Russia chose to disregard the offer and continue the senseless violence.

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry denounced the strikes, emphasizing that Russia's relentless attacks proved a blatant refusal to participate in ceasefires. These attacks serve as a grim reminder of the ongoing conflict and the urgent need for peace.
