Facebook Twitter Whatsapp E-Mail Print Copy Link More fans than ever before in German women's club football stormed the Hamburger Volkspark to witness the DFB-Pokal semi-final showdown between HSV and Werder Bremen. The Bundesliga side from Bremen secured a hard-fought victory over the Second Division team, creating record-breaking chaos.
In a thrilling DFB-Pokal semi-final, Werder Bremen women emerged victorious against second division team HSV in a record-breaking match at the sold-out Volkspark Stadium, with a final score of 3:1 (1:1, 0:0) after 120 tense minutes. Sophia Weidauer (82/117) and Verena Wieder (120+1) scored the goals preventing a draw, while Sarah Stöckmann (90) managed to grab a consolation goal for HSV. However, Bremen's Saskia Matheis was sent off in the 54th minute with a yellow-red card for a late challenge against Lisa Baum.
Hamburger SV women, accustomed to playing for an average audience of around 400 fans in the Second Division, rose to the occasion despite the line-up disadvantage. In front of a record-breaking crowd of 57,000 fans, this was the highest attendance for a women's match in German club football, surpassing the previous record of 44,808 fans at the 2023 Pokal final in Cologne. The world record was set a year earlier in the 2022 Champions League semi-final between FC Barcelona and VfL Wolfsburg with 91,648 fans.
Werder captain Lina Hausicke says on Sky, "This is incredible, I've lost my voice. I don't know what to say. This game was a thriller. We didn't play well, but we're in the final and overjoyed. We're all completely drained, it was emotionally and physically demanding." HSV player Christin Meyer described the support of their own fans as "enormous" but could only lament the pain of defeat immediately after the final whistle, while acknowledging the significance of the event for women's football.
A Goalkeeping Show
The electric atmosphere in the Volkspark was evident from the start, with both fan groups representing their clubs energetically. On the pitch, the underdogs from Hamburg, despite their league position, presented a formidable challenge. The phenomenal performances of goalkeepers Inga Schuldt (HSV) and Livia Peng kept the score locked at 0-0 during the first half.
The second half started with a shock for the slightly nervous Bremen women, as Matheis was sent off for a late challenge against Baum. Despite their man advantage, HSV struggled to seize the opportunity and create clear-cut chances. In a surprising turn of events, Weidauer capitalized on a mistake by Schuldt to put Werder 1:0 up. With just minutes left in regular time, HSV managed to equalize thanks to a powerful free-kick from Baum, but her effort hit the bar, allowing Stöckmann to sneak past Bremen's defense for a last-minute equalizer. A determined Weidauer sealed the victory in extra time for Bremen.
Football "Bummer, that's for sure" - Bayern women's star Giulia Gwinn expresses disappointment over Bayern men's absence The impending final between Bremen and FC Bayern promises to be a powerhouse clash taking place in Cologne on May 1st. A hat-trick from Danish forward Pernille Harder guided Bayern Munich to a 3-2 victory against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim despite a 0:2 deficit. However, team captain Giulia Gwinn, who missed the action due to injury, was disheartened that none of the male club officials, including President Herbert Hainer and Honorary President Uli Hoeneß, turned up to watch the event. "Performing exceptionally well in the league, we'd expect them to show up for the cup semi-final. That's very, very disheartening," Gwinn told Sky.
