Massive flooding engulfs New York City's subway system amid torrential downpour

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, the eastern seaboard of the United States has been hit by a sudden and devastating bout of heavy rainfall. The outskirts of the hurricane caused an hour-long downpour that broke records in New York, amounting to 80 millimeters of rain and equating to 80 liters per square meter.

This deluge has resulted in seven reported deaths so far, with emergency situations being reported across the city. The streets of New York have been transformed into raging rivers, and avenues as wide as the Hudson have been turned into torrential waterways. The subway network has come to a standstill due to the flooding, and a travel ban has been imposed within the metropolis.

In the neighboring city of Passaic, New Jersey, a man lost his life due to floodwaters while in his car. The region has seen severe damage, with destroyed homes, roofs, and facades being reported. Hurricane Ida made landfall as a dangerous Category 4 hurricane near New Orleans on Sunday, causing destruction in parts of New Jersey before its arrival.

Elsewhere, the National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of tornadoes in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Researchers are surprised where the ice loss is slowing down due to climate change, with new findings shedding light on previously unknown factors.
